What is the definition of a child?
The definition of a child as defined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child is any human being under the age of 18. Child Wise uses this definition as the only consistent definition able to be applied to any child anywhere in the world.
topHow does Child Wise prevent child abuse?
Child Wise combines direct support, counseling, advocacy, education, training, capacity building and research to provide a comprehensive and specialised child protection response. All Child Wise’s programs work across the continuum of prevention, protection and recovery. They are child-focused and informed by a fundamental belief that children have a right to physical and psychological safety – and that individuals, communities and governments have both the capacity and responsibility to protect children. We believe this multi-faceted approach is the most effective way to have real impact upon the complex (supply and demand) factors that perpetuate the cycle of abuse.
topAre donations to Child Wise tax-deductible?
Child Wise has Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status with the Australian Taxation Office and as such all donations over $2 towards our work in Australia are tax deductible.
topWhere does Child Wise get its funding from?
Child Wise receives funding from a variety of sources including individual and corporate donations, government funding and philanthropic trusts and foundations. Their generous support ensures that we can continue to work to protect children everywhere.
topHow does Child Wise choose to allocate its funds?
Child Wise works hard to keep administration costs down so that your generous donations toward the fight against the sexual exploitation of children go directly to the protection of children. 90 cents of every dollar you give goes directly towards our programs. See our annual financial expenditure outlined in our annual reports for a breakdown of funds allocation.
Child Wise allocates funding depending on its source. When we receive funding from the government or a trust for a specific project, 100% of the money goes to that project. Similarly, when we receive funds via individual or group donations for a specific service or campaign, 100% of the money is invested in the particular service or campaign.
The remaining general donations we receive are all invested in the work that Child Wise does to protect children from abuse and we allocate funds on a needs basis.
topHow is Child Wise accountable?
We ensure our activities are accountable in a number of ways.
Child Wise is a signatory to the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID) Code of Conduct which defines minimum standards of governance, management and accountability for non-government organisations. As a signatory we demonstrate our commitment to ethical practice and public accountability.
Child Wise is an Australian Company Limited by Guarantee. As such we are required to comply with all relevant Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) guidelines.
Our independent Board of Directors meets quarterly to review operations, finances and ensure Child Wise is meeting its strategic goals.
Finally, it’s important to Child Wise that everyone in the community is able to access details of our activities. Our publications and Annual Reports are available on this website. Contact us if you require further information.
topYes, Child Wise is audited independently on an annual basis. You can find a copy of our audited financial statements at the rear of each annual report.
topIs Child Wise affiliated with religious or other organisations?
Child Wise is the Australian representative of ECPAT (End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography, and the Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes) International; a global network of over 80 organisations working in more than 70 countries to eradicate the sexual exploitation of children. We are sometimes known as ECPAT Australia.
Child Wise is not affiliated with any religion, faith or any other organisation. We are an independent, non-discriminatory, not-for-profit organisation committed to assisting children everywhere – regardless of their nationality, gender, culture or religion.
Child Wise is not associated with Growing Families International Inc., Growing Families Australia or the “On Becoming Childwise” curriculum.
topWhat is our policy for using photos of children in our materials?
Child Wise uses photos of children for aesthetic purposes only. All photos used have been taken with the consent of the subject and do not, to the best of our knowledge, represent a child who has been sexually abused.
